SUMMER
NATS
The "SUMMER
NATS" was held in Australia for two days on January 22 and 23,2006,
in WOLLONGONG located 100km south of Sydney, Australia. The SUMMER NATS
is a summer version of the WINTER CHAMPS. Unlike Japan, Australia is in
the middle of summer in January. Many drivers gathered to this well-established
event from all over Australia. The event was held at the
FAIRY MEADOW located only five minutes away from a major beach spot and
some drivers were also enjoying themselves at the beach with their families.
The last HPI WINTER CHAMPS was also held at the FAIRY MEADOW. The track
is placed in a unique square area and it is quite a challenging track due
to the short intervals between corners which demand high driving skills
and machine performance. Though ATSUSHI HARA and SURIKARN CHAIDAJSURIYA
(TEAM HB/HPI drivers) announced their participation in the SUMMER NATS with
Hot Bodies Cyclone in the HPI WINTER CHAMPS 2005, we failed to show the
Cyclone
set up by works drivers in action due to the rain. DAISUKE YOSHIOKA (TEAM
HB/HPI) who is famous for his daring driving style especially in the last
minute of a race came to the event from Japan. Top drivers gathered from
all over the country, including ANDREW ABBOT (TEAM ASSOCIATED) who showed
great strength in the HOBBY DIRECT/RACING LINES INTERNATIONAL and some TEAM
X-RAY members who demonstrated high-level performance already in the practice
session. SIMON NICHOLSON, who won in both EU Touring and GP Touring classes
of the last Australia National Race Event, was the center of attention.
SIMON NICHOLSON was also one of the higher-ranking winners of the FEMCA,
which was his first international race event to attend. Being only 18 years
old, SIMON NICHOLSON is expected to be highly successful in the ISTC World
Championships 2006.
Day 1
The GP Class rounds were held on Saturday and SIMON NICHOLSON showed overwhelming
strength in the qualifying and final rounds to win the championship! All
the GP Class rounds provided momentum for the EP Touring rounds on Sunday.
Day 2
The site was full of drivers' tents since early in the morning on Sunday.
The highest temperature was expected to reach 35 degrees Celsius. As the
temperature rises, the grip condition will be worsened and burden on motors
will be heavier. Day 2 started with qualifying rounds of Stock Class and
EP Touring Modified Class with all the spectators watching.
In the 1st qualifying of the EP Touring Modified Class, DAISUKE YOSHIOKA
was the only one who made 24 laps, while ANDREW ABBOT and SIMON NICHOLSON
failed to run out for five minutes. In the 2nd qualifying, SIMON NICHOLSON
completed a 5-minute race making no mistakes and renewed his time. In
the 3rd qualifying, ANDREW ABBOT renewed his time despite the scorching
hot
track surface. Through the rounds, DAISUKE YOSHIOKA won TQ with the fastest
time record in the 1st qualifying, followed by SIMON NICHOLSON and ANDREW
ABBOT. ADAM LINNAN and DARRIN CAMPBELL came in right behind ANDREW ABBOT,
ready to catch up in the final rounds.
In the Stock Class using 27T motors, LUC BOTTON, who won TQ in the qualifying,
won the championship after finishing 1st in the 2nd and 3rd final rounds.
In the Modified Class final rounds, DAISUKE YOSHIOKA retired before making
a lap in Round 1 due to engine breakage. In rising temperature, DARRIN
CAMPBELL finished 1st in Round 1 after fierce battle with SIMON NICHOLSON.
In Round 2, DAISUKE YOSHIOKA and SIMON NICHOLSON showed one-on-one fight.
DAISUKE YOSHIOKA used up all of his 7T and 8T motors and he was using
a 9T motor in the round. Closely followed by SIMON NICHOLSON, DAISUKE
YOSHIOKA had a crash in a high-speed corner and lost several places. SIMON
NICHOLSON finished 1st in the Round 2, followed by DARRIN CAMPBELL, which
made him tied with SIMON NICHOLSON in terms of the overall points. In
Round 3,
DAISUKE YOSHIOKA and SIMON NICHOLSON were the first ones who left the
scramble at the start. While DAISUKE YOSHIOKA took advantage of his TQ
position and kept making perfect laps, SIMON NICHOLSON ran right behind
DAISUKE YOSHIOKA. Both of their Cyclone cars ran for five minutes in incredible
speed. At 30 seconds before the finish, SIMON NICHOLSON slowed down a
bit and let DAISUKE YOSHIOKA finish 1st. In the end, SIMON NICHOLSON won
the championship in the EP Touring Modified Class, followed by DARRIN
CAMPBELL and ANDREW ABBOT. DAISUKE YOSHIOKA finished 5th.

RC racing has been advancing rapidly in Australia. The event showed great
battles of the Cyclone cars. Though DAISUKE YOSHIOKA failed to win the
championship, he met many wonderful HPI/HB drivers and it was a very fruitful
event for him. JOSH KEMP also showed his great strength in the race. He
is a popular driver and writer for "Racing with Josh!", a serial
article in the Racing Lines, and let's look forward to his article aboutthis
event. We sincerely appreciate all the support given during our stay in
Australia. It was such a wonderful trip for us and we are already looking
forward to seeing you all again in the near future.
